Maybe provide an option to drop the undo steps, similar to that in present in photoshop, which I think contribute to the overall memory footprint bloat when having several files opened and/or when CE has been opened for many days/weeks.

hmm This is an interesting point..
I tried to undo the last 100 actions i performed and it work.
It might be an idea to reduce the total remembered actions to about 32-40 (vim in linux remembers the last 40 iirc so it cant have that much of an overhead)
But having an option is out of the question:

If this change is made, please make it user-configurable. I have a lot of ram and make full use of the large undo memory.
