Underscores cannot be displayed if the comments are italic in PHP files.

Not just PHP... in any comments that happen inside a "range", when range background colours are enabled (and they are by default)
You noticed in PHP, because PHP comes inside a range begun by <?
Go to PREFERENCES -> General -> Colors -> Miscellaneous -> Click on "Range 1 bkgr" and choose WHITE
do the same for "Range 2 bkgr"
Problem solved...
HOWEVER... I DO use range background colours, never noticed this bug, might be new or something; but I'd like it fixed... range bkg colors are WAY TOO usefull for PeopleSoft SQR...

I can confirm both the bug and the workaround listed here in CE 3.72 build 236
